vRanger with or without VCB ?

    Re all

I test vRanger since few days without VCB.

I'd like to know what advantages VCB+vRanger offer versus vRanger alone?

must i install VCB? it is neccesary?

    Thanks

Re: vRanger with or without VCB ?

You don’t need VCB... If your backing up without VCB we use the esx host to compress the VMDK files. So , we will use a small amount of CPU on the host. We also use the network to send the backups.

If you use VCB and vRanger together we will backup over fiber and not use any CPU on the esx host to compress the VMDK files.

So, no CPU and no network traffic when using VCB and vRanger together.

Well, if a understand, with VCB all backups (full, diff) are freeLAN ?

FreeLAN is available without VCB only for full backups...

Re: vRanger with or without VCB ?

    ?????

vRanger does backup full without VCB, so VCB is useless !

VRanger replace completly VCB. Isn't it?

Re: vRanger with or without VCB ?

No, as Jason mention VCB allows us to transfer the work of compression and network transfers from the service console to the Windows proxy server. The ESX hosts just have to open and commit snapshots.

Without VCB the service console handles the compression and network transfer which does place some load on the SC. You can of course throttle this and control how much you use. Without VCB you do also get access to differentials and VSS today.
