VSS in 4.2 DPP

Hi Guys
First post on the forum, I was just wondering;
In version 3.x, there was a checkbox with the option to enable or disable VSS for your job.
In version 4.x, this checkbox is no longer present.
I am researching the backup of our SQL servers and was wondering how I would enable VSS?
Is it a case of ensuring that the Volume Shadow Copy Service is set to automatic within Windows Services?

The recommendation in Ranger 4.2 is to utilize VSS thru the VMWare tools on the actual VM, and to enable guest quiescing when setting up the backup job in the Ranger GUI. To enable VMWare's VSS, do the following:
Log into the VM you are going to backup, in this case a SQL box. Go to Add/ Remove Programs Locate VMWare Tools Click on the modify button. This will bring up the VMWare tools. From this view, you can install VMWare's VSS on the VM. Once VSS is installed, you can go into the Ranger GUI to create the backup job. When you get to the options, you should check the box to enable guest quiescing.

Running backups with quiescing disabled is not an 'incorrect' function, however, utilizing VSS offers more db specific protections in that VSS freezes the db during snapshotting to help prevent corruption during the snapshotting process. Disabled guest quiescing prevents VMWare from freezing the VMs OS during the snapshotting process.

Thanks for your replies mate, much appreciated.
So from past experience, what options have you guys selected when backing up a full MSSQL Database Server (not the MSDE engine)?
At the moment I have been backing up with quiescing disabled, as per the document I found and linked above, but I am beginning to think this may not be the best way?
I am going to be testing the restore of one of our SQL servers tomorrow so I will let you know how I get on.
thanks again for the reply

For a SQL db server in Ranger 4.2, we would recommend enabling quiescing, and installing the VMWare VSS tool for use when backing up.

jphillips thanks for your help :)
Just for your information, I restored my backup with quescing disabled and it did return to a crash consistent state (Windows asked why the server had shutdown unexpectedly)
I am backing up with quiescing enabled now, how should I expect the server react when powering on? Normal boot (splash screen etc) or as described above?
